How to re-start your mind & body after a trip
I know what you’re thinking…why would I need to detox myself after a vacation? Well, it’s not really about needing to take a trip after your trip. It’s more like, my body just went through multiple time zones, altitudes, temperatures & I may or may not have over-indulged in the food/drink department.
When I’m away, whether it’s for business or leisure, I always find myself skewing more towards the over-indulgence side of things. Yes you can find a gym while you’re away & sweat off the calories, but it’s simply not the same as doing a complete body reset once you get back to your familiar environment.
Our most recent trip to Wyoming proved to me that although I had been craving the fresh mountain air, my body just wasn’t used to the wear & tear of travel as it was a mere 8 months prior. Plus I had never traveled during a pandemic before so my OCD was on HIGH alert & the need to cleanse myself post-trip was HIGH on my to-do list.
After any trip I always take 24 hours to decompress. As someone once told me, “you need to be gentle to yourself.” This is especially true when you return home from a trip. It’s important to help your body & mind re-align with your schedule otherwise you do run the risk of literally running yourself down to the ground & getting sick.
SO…I made sure that the day following my return from the trip, I went through my full detox routine. Halfway through I remembered that I probably should have filmed a quick vlog for you but hopefully this blog will give you some great tips & tricks on how to fully detox & reset your system.
We all know this to be true & I am very guilty of never drinking enough. But after a trip it is critical to flush your system completely out. So I get a little help from Liquid I.V. Seen these at your local Costco? (you can also score these on Amazon orTarget)
One of these packets = 3 bottles of water, essentially multiplying your intake on one shot. Buyer beware if you are super sensitive to caffeine, this does have it but it also packs a ton of electrolytes as well to keep you super hydrated.
Typically for the first 24 hours post-trip I will stick to liquid only intake. This way I can give my digestive system a good jump start & get rid of all the food I ate while I was away.
Even if you don’t overindulge on a trip it still wouldn’t hurt to flush your system every so often.
One of the main things I sip on throughout the day is bone broth. This highly nutritious stock is commonly used in soups, sauces and gravies. It has also recently gained popularity as a health drink. Studies have shown that drinking bone broth may be beneficial for the joints and digestive system, among other things.
You could always make your own…there are some great how-to recipes online. Or if you are time starved like me, just purchase at your local food store & keep it stocked in your pantry.
My go-to is from an organic brand called Pacific Foods. You can find it at Costco or order online. It comes in a 6 pack carton container.
Tea…did you know that Tea originated in the region encompassing today’s Northeast India, north Myanmar, Southwest China and Tibet, where it was used as a medicinal drink by various ethnic groups in the region. (Thanks WIKI).
There are some fantastic tea choices to sip on while you detox & my fav is from TAZO. It’s a green ginger blend thats low in caffeine & has a bold flavor. I have drank this tea in the past when I’ve felt a cold coming on & it really does help alleviate any common symptoms.
Ok so this is self explanatory but I always like to take things up a notch. A deep soaking bath can not only relax your body & mind but it can literally help you sweat out the toxins in your body.
My favorite bath soaks all contain some sort of Epsom salt as this will draw out the toxins from your skin. I also have a go to bath soak by J.R. Watkins called DETOX Bath Elixir.
This stuff smells so fresh & leaves your skin squeaky clean. There is a whole DETOX bundle on their website + a 10% off promotion if you enter your email. WORTH IT!
Ok now comes the not so fun part if you tend to get hot fast. BUT I can assure you this is the very best way to detox your body. Draw the bath water for as hot as you can stand it without your skin turning colors OR it stinging your skin. No need for physical pain here 🙂
Pour in the epsom salt or whatever bath detox wash you want, then take your tea cup (don’t pour it in) but have it on hand. Soak for approx 10 minutes. Play your fav tunes or just meditate. Then sit up in the bath & sip your hot tea while in the bath.
Trust me on this…it will get STEAMY! But the whole point is to have the sweat literally bead & run down your face. Mildly uncomfy? Sure. But you will feel like a brand new you once your done. Sit there until you finish the cup.
I also tend to stay away from any alcohol for at least 7 days post-trip. This might be harder for some than others if you entertain a lot for work, etc. but it’s a great way to reset your liver if you decided to pop a few too many bottles to celebrate your trip 🙂
You are now well on your way to fully cleansing your body post-trip. If you can be gentle with yourself. Take a nap if you can find the time or step outside & breathe in some air.
Want to go even further with your detox, I’ve linked below some of my fan favs that I consistently go to after a trip.
